California Supreme Court rules employees must be paid for sleep time

On January 8, 2015 the California Supreme Court ruled that employees that are required to sleep at the job site must be paid for the hours they are sleeping on-site. The case is called Mendiola v. CPS Security Solutions, Inc. and it’s a big victory for California workers. In the case, employees were required to remain on premise and on call at construction sites. The employer argued that they didn’t have to pay for sleep time because the guards weren’t working but the Cal Supreme Court found that the employer had sufficient control of the employees so the employees had to be paid for sleep time.
